Historical films are “moving image documents.” Historical films function as texts that can be analyzed, questioned, and discussed just like any other kind of historical document. In other words, just like print novels or stories, movies have purposes and themes. Why is a history movie telling a story about an era or event in a particular way? Why are certain perspectives emphasized and others de-emphasized or ignored? Powerful film-based instruction enables students to understand and critically evaluate a movie’s intentions as an account of the past and its messages about how the past relates to the present. Instruction for historical film literacy moves beyond thinking of movies just as a way to cover content. Movies are far better suited for goals that involve interpreting causes and effects in the past, evaluating the long-term significance or consequences of past events, or arguing how the past affects our world today than for covering basic factual knowledge.
