課程概述

流行文化為近年學界探討頗多的課題之一,蓋流行文化反應時代潮流與趨勢,其通俗性與生活層面結合,易於引發相關議題討論。此外,流行文化表現的方式與媒介因應科技發展而日新月異,一方面促進流行文化定義的擴大與多元,另一方面流行文化與相關業界、行銷與創意的結合也成為許多新興產業蓬勃發展的靈感與內涵。

    本課程以近代世界流行文化中的飲食文化、服飾文化、音樂文化與運動旅遊文化等諸層面作為探討的面向。課程設計一方面將世界近代歷史脈絡與流行文化發展與崛起的特點進行比對,以歷史與文化元素來解析流行趨勢的本質與背景,另一方面也透過案例的探討及相關業師經驗的分享,從實務面來引發學生對產業創意與創新的興趣。

授課內容

近代世界史中關於通俗與流行文化的探究為一有趣的課題。在19世紀以來,以歐美中產階級的崛起及人數的大幅增長為首,形塑新的價值觀與生活方式,帶動其特有文化在社會各場域中的發展,並在大眾傳媒的媒介傳佈下,形成多變的流行文化,引領世界各地的潮流與創新理念。

本課程以近代世界史為背景介紹流行文化元素出現、發展與擴張的原因、特點與發展模式。除介紹流行文化的概念與理論外,主要以世界各地飲食文化、服飾文化、音樂文化與運動旅遊文化等諸層面為授課主題,並佐以重要個案與個人在流行文化上的發揚進行討論。

The popular culture in the modern world history is a critical issue for both researchers and the public. Particularly, the middle-class rose as an influential social group in the 19th century, and their lifestyles, with unique elements and values, were formed in the context of historical background. In the following two centuries, middle-class gradually guides the society, reinforced by the public medium, with their lifestyles, leading to the emergence of a variety of popular culture to be created and innovated worldwide.

This course lectures popular culture since 19th century to modern times. The instructor hopes to introduce students with the evolution of popular culture in the context of recent two-century historical development globally. The content of the course includes: the general introduction and definition of popular culture; the development of food culture within Western traditions and history; the renewal of clothing ideas along with ethnic, gender, and fashion categories; the transformation of different musical genres, such as jazz, blues, country music, as well as their performances in the complex social backgrounds of West world; the sport industries and their popular developments for audiences and consumers. Significant case studies with each popular culture will also be presented and discussed.
